Animal Control

The Sault Ste. Marie & District SPCA is contracted by the City of Sault Ste. Marie to provide animal control services. We are responsible for enforcing all City by-laws pertaining to animal control as well as the Dog Owner's Liability Act. We provide animal control services seven days a week as well as an after hours emergency service. After hours calls are limited to injured animals or animals that are posing a threat to human safety.

Lost Pets

Stray animals are picked up and dropped off at the shelter on a daily basis. Should your pet go missing, we are the first place you should contact. We are not limited to just dogs and cats - we have reunited goats, budgies, iguanas and pigs with their owners.

More Information

Wildlife

There is a misperception that Animal Control includes wildlife services. Wildlife concerns fall under the authority of the Ministry of Natural Resources. We only have the authority to pick up injured wildlife and hold them until they can be transferred to a licensed wildlife custodian or euthanized. Being a northern community we face numerous issues with wildlife and we do our best to keep the public informed of the issues that we become aware of in the course of our duties.

Free Ride    Free Ride Program

Accidents happen, and if your pooch is picked up running at large and has his/her current dog tag on their collar, the service and pound fees will be waived.

A Free Ride can be applied once in a calendar year

City of Sault Ste. Marie Dog License

Under City By-Law 98-211, all residents who own a dog, must register them annually. The Sault Ste. Marie & District SPCA acts as the dog licensing agent for the City of Sault Ste. Marie.

Purchasing an annual dog license will ensure that your dog is returned quickly should he/she ever stray and assists us in providing animal control services in our community.
